Today I am going to go more in-depth about one of my businesses- Mouseishly. I make and sell custom mouse ears inspired by various Disney characters.
First a little backstory on me. If you know anything about me, you know that I am obsessed with everything Disney. I listen to Disney songs every day, quote Disney movies in normal conversation, and I have an annual pass to Disneyland. I’m also very crafty- I’m always creating something or coming up with new ideas for different projects. I’ve been sewing since I was 12 and knitting since I was 10. I also have a complex with just buying something. I always think I can make something better, cheaper, or faster. This is my Achilles’ heel. For my senior prom I insisted on making my own prom dress and I didn’t finish it until an hour before prom. But it did turn out just as I had pictured it.
So a few months after I had gotten my annual pass, after having visited Disneyland a few times, I was getting bored of my sequined Minnie ears that everyone seems to have in Disneyland. I had seen some cute handmade ears in the parks and of course I had to make my own. So I got some material, bought a grape soda pin, and my Up ears were born! At first I had no intention of selling them, but after posting a picture on my Instagram account and getting a few comments about them and getting compliments while wearing them in Disneyland, I was encouraged by my mom and a friend to sell them. So I started an Etsy shop and listed my ears! Within a few days I had sold my first pair.
Now I often spend my days sewing and gluing for hours making ears, meanwhile dreaming up new designs and brainstorming fabric options. Designing and sourcing materials for a new pair of ears is my favorite part of the process. I love to make my ears with beautiful textured fabrics and I play close attention to color schemes and pattern placement to ensure that people know exactly what character the ears represent. I’ve definitely learned that details can make or break an ear design.
I love making and selling ears because it brings two of my favorite things together- crafting and Disney! There’s not much more you can ask for out of a business! Not only is it incredibly fulfilling, but I love seeing my customers’ pictures of them wearing their Mouseishly ears! It always puts a smile on my face. You can find my shop at mouseishly.etsy.com
